U.K. Wind Farms

Offshore wind jobs are increasing in number because wind farms are contributing more to the means by which we get our electricity, especially in the U.K. It’s estimated that by 2020, offshore wind farms will provide for around 17 per cent of the electricity the U.K. uses. This increase in contribution is a result of expansion to the U.K.’s existing offshore wind-farm sites and the development of new sites. By 2020, there should be 29 offshore wind farms in operation or in the process of being completed, meaning that the U.K. will become a world leader in the creation of energy in this way.

In the U.K., this number has risen from 700 to 3,200 in the four years from 2007 to 2011. These numbers will increase again in the coming years and by 2020 the U.K. could have as many as 42,000 full-time jobs within the offshore wind-farm industry.

The market for offshore wind-farm energy itself is likely to increase in value too and will be worth in the region of £170 billion a year globally by the year 2050, according to figures from the Carbon Trust. This means that the number of UK jobs in the sector will continue to grow.
