Even in the current period of economic uncertainty, some sectors are experiencing growth. Offshore wind farms are one area that’s seeing rapid expansion and the creation of many new jobs. Offshore wind farms produce sustainable energy and are positioned away from the mainland out at sea. The idea is that since the wind at sea is likely to be stronger than on the mainland, more energy is generated by locating the wind farms in this way.

U.K. Wind Farms

Offshore wind jobs are increasing in number because wind farms are contributing more to the means by which we get our electricity, especially in the U.K. It’s estimated that by 2020, offshore wind farms will provide for around 17 per cent of the electricity the U.K. uses. This increase in contribution is a result of expansion to the U.K.’s existing offshore wind-farm sites and the development of new sites. By 2020, there should be 29 offshore wind farms in operation or in the process of being completed, meaning that the U.K. will become a world leader in the creation of energy in this way.

Jobs

This growth leads to a rise in the number of people employed to install, operate or maintain offshore wind farms. In the U.K., this number has risen from 700 to 3,200 in the four years from 2007 to 2011. These numbers will increase again in the coming years and by 2020 the U.K. could have as many as 42,000 full-time jobs within the offshore wind-farm industry.

Energy Markets

The market for offshore wind-farm energy itself is likely to increase in value too and will be worth in the region of £170 billion a year globally by the year 2050, according to figures from the Carbon Trust. This means that the number of UK jobs in the sector will continue to grow.

The important thing is that wind energy is sustainable, as opposed to energy from non-renewables that will eventually run out. For this reason, governments are investing more and more in sustainable energy and providing new jobs at the same time.

All businesses which employ staff have legal obligations to protect the health and safety of their employees, indeed, even if they do not employ anyone, they can still be legally obligated for the health and safety of members of the public whilst they are on the business premises. As part of these obligations employers need to make sure that adequate levels of first aid equipment are present on the premises and that they have chosen either an appointed person, to look after this equipment and call emergency services if necessary, or a qualified first aider, who be responsible for the aforementioned duties, but also for the actual administering of first aid treatment when required.
The difference between these two types of role is that of qualifications. A first aider needs to have received accredited first aid certification from an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive before they can perform workplace first aid. However there are two different levels of training that an employee can receive, when it comes to FAW: Emergency First Aid at Work and the standard First Aid at Work course. The former option is a shorter course – usually just one day – designed purely to provide a comprehensive overview of basic first aid and the regulations governing workplace health and safety. This course is recommended for people employed in lower risk workplaces, as it still covers key areas such as providing emergency aid in the event of choking, seizures, bleeding and unconsciousness.
The standard First Aid at Work course lasts for three days and will ensure that those receiving the qualification are able to provide first aid treatment for any illness or injury in the workplace. The course covers all of the types of injury or illness featured in the one-day emergency course, but also deals with serious injuries or illnesses such as heart problems and fractures. The certification received upon the successful completion of this course is valid for three years, after which time it is necessary to undertake a refresher course.
If you have had an injury at work before and needed to talk to the first aider, and you want to learn more about how to make an accidents at work compensation claim then visit www.theaccidentatworksite.com.
